Pellet grills and pizza ovens: sear, smoke and speed trade off

Testers keep finding the same trade-offs. Tom's Guide says no pellet smoker it has used gives a high-quality sear: the Traeger Westwood XL topped out at 450 F and its steak needed a hot pan, while Weber's Searwood XL 600 reached 600 F for a moderately good sear and Bob Vila's tester said it truly sears. For pizza, Homes & Gardens called the Ooni Karu 2 Pro the best oven it has tested, with cheese pizzas in a little over a minute, while Tom's Guide found Ninja's electric Woodfire Outdoor Oven easy to use but cooking a pie in 5 to 7 minutes and not as hot as dedicated ovens.

What to check before you buy:

If you sear steaks, check the grill's maximum temperature. If you smoke, check the hopper size and whether you want an app. For pizza, compare the largest pizza that fits, the fuel and the setup space.

Can a pellet grill sear steaks?

Only partly. Tom's Guide says the Westwood XL's 450 F isn't enough, while the Searwood XL 600's 600 F gave moderately good sears. Charcoal and gas still do better.

Is the Ooni Karu 2 Pro or the Ninja Woodfire better for pizza?
